Matt Damon, renowned actor and star of Good Will Hunting, candidly opens up about his biggest career regret – turning down a lead role in the blockbuster hit movie 'Avatar,' which later earned a staggering $2 billion at the box office.

James Cameron, the director of 'Avatar,' offered Damon the main role along with a lucrative deal that included 10% of the film's box office profits. However, Damon made the decision to pass on the offer, missing out on a potential earnings of $250 million, a decision he now deeply regrets.

In a joint interview with Zoe Saldana, who played the lead protagonist in 'Avatar,' Damon humorously admits that turning down the opportunity was "the dumbest thing an actor ever did in the history of acting."

While Saldana reassures him that his career hasn't suffered because of it, Damon jokes about what the movie would've been like with him in the lead role. He praises Saldana for her success in films that have grossed over $2 billion, contrasting with his own career that hasn't seen such box office numbers.

During the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, Damon made headlines by revealing that he rejected the role of Jake Sully, which eventually went to Sam Worthington. Damon humorously claimed, "You will never meet an actor who turned down more money."

James Cameron, in a separate interview, sympathized with Damon's decision, acknowledging that the actor had prior commitments to another 'Bourne' film. Despite that, Cameron stated that Damon was "beating himself up over this" and emphasized that he's one of the biggest movie stars in the world, urging him to move on from the missed opportunity.

In retrospect, Matt Damon's decision to decline the role of Jake Sully in 'Avatar' stands as a testament to the unpredictable and regretful choices that can arise in the entertainment industry.
